Five Health-Focused Resolutions to Make in 2017

New Year’s resolutions are like trendy gadgets on post-Christmas deep discount: They seem like a good idea, but they end up forgotten. Year after year, you set lofty goals without considering if they meet your needs, personality, or schedule. This year, set your sights on making changes that fit who you are and how you live. In the spirit of Juice Plus+’s commitment to health and wellness, here are five resolutions you won’t have trouble keeping up during 2017.

  1. Help out. Helping others is a definite boost to overall well being. With just a little digging, you can find many worthy causes right in your own community. For the upcoming new year, align yourself with a charity or nonprofit organization and resolve to participate once a month, through either donations or volunteering. Every effort big or small makes a difference—for both you and those you’re supporting.
  2. Give 20. If you’re tired of getting up at the crack of dawn, using your lunch break, or generally stressing out about how to fit in a workout every day, try lowering your expectations in 2017. You don’t have to spend an hour a day pumping iron or on the treadmill to be in good health—just 20 to 30 minute workouts abound. Not only are they easy, but they work too!
  3. Get green. Set aside one night per week as salad night. Dinner salads go beyond grilled chicken or steak. You can keep those old favorites if you want, or you can nix the meat altogether. Either way, try adding grains like quinoa, farro, wheat berries, or lentils, as well as roasted portabellas, tomatoes, and root veggies. Throw in toppers like nuts, seeds, and shaved hard cheeses. Dinner salads are full of healthy nutrients; plus, they’re easy to prepare, which gives you more time to enjoy your evening.
  4. Stop scrolling. Make this a year of social-media efficiency. Don’t turn to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter out of boredom. When you pick up your phone to check your accounts, first ask yourself if there’s anything else you should be doing. When you do spend time on social media, learn to recognize when you’re about to waste a bunch of valuable time in a “scroll hole.” By following this advice, you’ll end up with more time and less eye strain.
  5. Swap smart. Survey your cabinets and fridge. You likely have a handful of items you can ditch for nutrient-dense, healthier substitutes. For instance, sour cream is easily replaced with plain Greek yogurt. This swap is not only healthy but also cost efficient because the yogurt doubles as a sweet treat with the simple addition of fruit preserves! Another good idea is to use quinoa pasta instead of regular wheat pasta. This simple swap adds protein and nutrients. Also try hummus or smashed avocado as a sandwich spread in place of mayo!
