4 Ways to Make Your Healthy New Year’s Resolution a Habit

Have you ever made a New Year’s resolution, only to find yourself falling off the wagon before Martin Luther King Day? It can happen to the best of us. But, whether you want to just eat better or exercise more, there are common sense steps you can take to improve your odds like the four below from the American Psychological Association — in other words, folks who know something about the workings of the human mind and how to motivate it!

  1. Take One Step at a Time. Don’t try to change your whole life all at once, or you will become overwhelmed and give up. Focus on what you want to change most and start there.
  2. Start Small. Make your initial goal achievable. Instead of saying you resolve to lose 50 pounds, maybe you will take a walk around the block every day for a month and save dessert for special occasions. When the month is up, you can add new goals.
  3. Share Your Journey. Tell people what you’ve resolved. It will give you a sense of accountability. In fact, you have a 25% chance of completing a goal if you consciously decide you will do it. That figure jumps up to 65% if you commit to someone else that you will do it. It then soars to 95% if you have a specific accountability appointment with that person. Plus, when you share your journey, your friends and family may also offer moral support and share ideas about what’s worked for them.
  4. Don’t Expect Perfection: Sometimes you will eat the candy bar, and some days you will skip the gym. If you’re aiming for perfection, you will become discouraged more easily when you fail to achieve it. You may even give up on your goal entirely. Instead, be gentle with yourself, and just pick back up where you left off the next day. If you’re in this for the long haul, there will be bumps in the road, and that’s okay!

One easy resolution to keep is to take your Juice Plus+ every day. With the nutrition of 30 fruits, vegetables, and grains, Juice Plus+ helps bridge the gap on days when you don’t quite keep your resolutions. Research has also shown that taking Juice Plus+ makes it more likely that you will adopt healthy habits, such as eating more fruits and vegetables and drinking fewer sugary drinks. That’s probably because taking one simple step makes you want to take the next one. Your first success fuels your future successes.
